접속사
- Connects words, phrases, or clauses.
※ 한 문장 전체에서, "접속사의 개수 + 1 = 동사의 개수"가 성립한다.
접속사의 종류
- 접속사는 등위 접속사, 상관 접속사, 종속 접속사로 구성된다.
1) Coordinate Conjuntion (등위 접속사)
- (품사 / 구조)가 같은 (단어 / 구 / 절)을 이어주는 접속사이다.
ex) and, but, yet, or, so 등
※ so는 결과의 의미를 내포하고 있어, 뒤에 완전절이 붙을 가능성이 높다.
a) 단어 + 등위 접속사 + 단어
ex) The research and development department conducted a survey.
b) 구 + 등위 접속사 + 구
ex) The city government will create theme parks by the river or on the hill.
c) 절 + 등위 접속사 + 절
ex) The secretary made a backup of the files, so the information was recovered.
2) Correlative Conjunction (상관 접속사)
- 두 단어 이상으로 구성되어 하나의 Pair로 쓰이는 접속사이다.
a) both A and B
: A와 B 둘 다
b) either A or B
: A나 B 둘 중 하나
c) neither A nor B
: A와 B 둘 다 아닌
d) not A but B \(\iff\) B, but not A
: A가 아닌 B
e) not only A but (also) B \(\iff\) B as well as A
: A, B 둘다 (동등 비교)
3) Subordinating Conjunction (종속 접속사)
- 절과 절을 대등하게 잇는 것이 아닌, Master-Slave 관계로 잇는 접속사이다.
- 주절, 종속절, 종속 접속사가 합쳐져 한 문장을 구성한다.
- 종속절은 주절에 비해 문장 내에서 작은 역할(품사 역할; 명사절, 형용사절, 부사절)을 수행하게 된다.
- 종속 접속사는 오로지 절과 절만을 연결하며, 단어나 구는 연결하지 않는다.
a) 명사절 접속사

ex-목적어역할) The landlord hasn't decided (if he will renew the contract.)

b) 부사절 접속사
- 부사절 접속사 + 완전절
- 주절* + 부사절 접속사 + 부사절**
* 주절: 말하고자 하는 문장
** 부사절: 보조적인 문장; 조건, 이유, 시간, 양보, 목적

※ so that 용법

ex) I was so tired that I couldn't do my homework.
ex) A lot of students use smartphones, so that they can't focus on studying.
* 주어 + 동사 + so that + 주어 + can/could/may + 동사
: 여기서, so that = in order that 이다.
